Keyword Optimization: Choosing relevant keywords

Yesterday we wrote about how to build a business online and the first steps we discussed were first determining what you ultimately want to achieve for your business. Then we moved on to finding the appropriate keywords to describe your product/service.

Today we discuss keyword optimization, or choosing the best keywords to market your site. There are several factors to consider when choosing keywords and they are

1. Relevance – How relevant are your chosen keywords to your business? You must keep in mind what the searchers are thinking when they are typing in a search phrase. The more relevant they are to your business, the more likely you will attract qualified leads. For example, you may be tempted to compete on a broad term like “bikes.” However you may only sell “mountain bikes.” In this case it would make sense for you to only compete on the term “mountain bikes.”

Now I’m all for competing on the broad phrases if the competition is not too steep. In most cases, business owners do not have the budget or time to put some much money and effort into the broader, more competitive phrases. In this case narrowing the focus is much more beneficial. Of course the terms must be directly relevant and not far off subsection of a market.

For example, you would not want to compete the term “bikes”, if you only sell bike parts or bike repair.

This may seem like an obvious approach but mishaps in this area are some of the most prominent problems with seo failure. Think about your own search habits and then put yourself in the same position to see how you would search for your product or service if you were the consumer.
