Keyword Optimization: Money Keywords

Continuing with our series on Keyword optimization, we arrive at the next step in the keyword selection process. If you remember the first two steps were to choose:
1. Relevant Keywords
2. Keywords with sufficient amount of searches to increase the likelihood of good traffic flow

The 3rd component of keyword optimization is choosing money keywords. These are keywords that are most likely to result in sales. For example when someone types a broad phrase like “dogs”, they could be looking to purchase dogs or just general information on dogs (perhaps for a book report or something).

This is important because you wouldn’t want to choose a word like “dogs” (even if you sell dogs). Why? For starters that keyword, although it has a ton of searches, most are not targeted. Secondly, it would be extremely difficult to rank for such a keyword, extremely expensive and it would take a very long time. All of this and most of the traffic will not be interested in whatever you are selling.

Now if you had the long range goals of having an “everything you need to know about dogs” site, then this may be an option if you are willing to really engage and build this market.

Most business owners though are looking to rank quickly so that their sales can justify the cost. In this case, we recommend first choosing keywords in which the prospect is most likely looking to buy something. We call this the commercial intent. There is a free tool from MSN that predicts the likelihood that a searcher is looking to purchase something versus just looking for information.

The tool can be found here
