Keyword Optimization: Targeted traffic

Continuing on from our previous discussion on keyword optimization, we move to the second factor influencing your success online. This is called targeted traffic. Yesterday it was relevant keywords. Now that you have figured out which keywords are relevant, now you have to make sure they have enough searches to potentially bring you enough traffic. Ok I’ll explain.

See there are two separate issues here:

1. Searches
2. Traffic

Searches are the actual number of times a particular search term is typed into the search engines every month. There are free tools like the Google Analytics tool (link on side menu), that will estimate the number of searches any given phrases has each month. Of course it’s not 100% but it’s a good start and best of all its FREE. Moving on…

Now after you view the number of searches, you have to realize that not all of these people will click on your link in the search engine results (provided you make it there). So the number of people that actually click on your link is called “traffic.” So obviously you want the highest position because you want the highest chance of getting the most traffic to your site. The first listing is most likely to get clicked and it goes down from there. Anything after the first page has a very little chance of getting clicked (although some to go far).

However if your listing text is really relevant, coupled with the higher chances of getting clicked, you are on your way to increasing your web site traffic. Your listing is like a teaser for what’s inside if they click. If what they read in the results is not interesting enough, prospects will likely scan down the page until they find one that catches their eye.

So all in all, the goal here is to select keywords with enough traffic potential to warrant your time. If there are little or no searches, then how can you expect any traffic? Right. You can’t. This is one trick that may sly seo companies will try to use. Number one rankings for search terms with no searches…No searches = no traffic = no business = waste of time and money.
