What Yahoo/Bing Merger means to SEO

By now everyone has probably heard about the Yahoo and Bing merger. I thought I’d take a detour from our current series to comment on this a little. Just the other day Yahoo just announced that their search results will now be powered by Bing. So what does this mean for you as SEO clients or prospects? Well it means that the 2nd two larger search engines are now 1. So there is Google and Bing now as the top two in search.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Google controls roughly 66% of the market, while Yahoo and Bing combined, only 28%. Now there is no question that for now Google is still the priority but how does this merger fair with clients again? Well it’s pretty simple, All of your Yahoo results are now non-existent for organic search. It’s all Bing Baby.

So if you had decent rankings in Bing and not so good in Yahoo, then this is all a nice surprise for you. If you had higher search rankings in Yahoo, then it may take a little bit longer to catch up in Bing but overall the search results seem to be doing really well for our clients in Bing and the transition is more positive than not.

Google still trumps Bing by far and is still the preferred search engine amongst consumers…for now. It is however, worth recognizing the issues that this brings to Google in terms of competition. For us as orange county search engine optimization fanatics, it’s one less search engine to be concerned with. For Google…well is we know them as well we think we do, they will not be taking this lightly.
